Welcome to the second edition of the SIOR ADVISIOR ! We look forward to hearing your feedback and improving the AdviSIOR for our members.

President’s Corner

We have had a great start to 2018 and hope yours is going just as fantastic! We are now 89 members strong and there are industry leaders in the process of becoming members this year. If you are aware of professionals in the industry that would make great SIORs, dont hesitate to get them in touch with us.

Our 2018 began with our Annual Ski Day where we welcomed 47 SIOR members, 36 guests, and 27 sponsors to the beautiful Blue Mountains for two days of networking and outdoor enjoyment at Craigleith Ski Club. We followed that with Spring Seminar hosted at Oxford Properties where we had over 150 people in attendance to hear from industry experts from Ware Malcomb, Oxford Properties, Orlando Corporation and Menkes Developments.

This year we have also launched a digital campaign to increase brand awareness of SIOR in the province. SIOR Global played an instrumental role in helping us launch the campaign we are seeing some great stats on our website, our membership directory and our events.

2018 also happens to my last year on the board as Chapter President. It has been an incredible journey, we have made great strides in making the chapter a standout success for SIOR and I would like to thank my fellow board members and chapter members that have helped make it such a success. This is also a great point to invite our members to volunteer their time and expertise by joining the Canada Central board of directors. It has been great experience for me to give back to SIOR and to the chapter that helped me professionally for so long. If you are interested, feel free to send us an email.

Finally, I would request you, our members, to reach out to us and let us know how the Chapter can help deliver value to you. We look forward to your feedback.

You may have also seen the top transaction for 2017 released by Global a few weeks back. As one of the most vibrant and successful chapters of SIOR, we would like our chapter members to included in this list next year! We want to highlight your success to the world and help you get the recognition that you deserve.

Benefit from increased exposure—which can ultimately lead to more business for you. Your transactions are featured on your SIOR profile, on the SIOR website, and in the SIOR Report magazine. SIOR presents awards annually in several categories including the largest number of transactions and largest dollar volume transactions.

In order to achieve this, we would like to request, you – our members, to submit your transactions to SIOR Global here (MySIOR login required) and to us at the Chapter by email at contact@siorcanada.com. We will be creating a space to display this information on our home page, newsletter and our social media channels. With our current digital campaign to promote more brand awareness for SIOR in Ontario, we want more people to be aware of the success of our members.

Q&A with our newest member – Karl Innanen (Colliers International)

Karl Innanen – Colliers International

How long have you been working in CRE? What do you enjoy the most about working in it?

I have been in the commercial real estate business for 27 years, I started right out of university.  What I enjoy most is the variety of the projects that I work on.

How did you first hear about SIOR?

Early in my career I worked for a broker, John Whitney, who is a 3rd generation SIOR. So I learned about SIOR from him and participated in some of the SIOR social functions like the Ski Day.

What convinced you to get your designation and become a member?

I had been considering becoming an SIOR for some time. Then Darren Shaw an SIOR joined our office and I started to learn more about SIOR from him and I decided it was time to make the leap.

As a new member, what are you looking to get out of being a part of SIOR?

I’m really looking forward to the networking at the events and conferences. I just came back from my first conference in Austin TX and it was fantastic.  I met lots of great people and it was a really great way to learn about an very interesting city.

What advice would you give to any brokers out there who are unsure about joining SIOR?

Do it now. Don’t waste time wondering about it, just do it.  It’s a smart career move.
